Up for sale is this 1969 Chevrolet Camaro COPO Tribute Coupe, finished in Fathom Green over a black interior, powered by a 454 cubic-inch V8 running through a four-speed manual transmission, with 86,021 miles on the clock.
This week, Dream Cars is featuring some very clean examples of iconic coupes, from arguably their best generations. A couple are thoroughly restored, and all look great on the outside, inside, and underneath – exceptionally well cared for and hard to find, with great specification.
This 1969 Chevrolet is a tribute car of the famed COPO specification of first-generation Camaros. COPO is the acronym for the Central Office Purchase Order, which was a department of Chevrolet usually reserved for dealers ordering fleet sales. But because this was the era when GM was removing performance options from dealer ordering sheets – intentionally done as a result of public pressure over fear of high performance cars being considered “dangerous” – the committed upper management at Chevy ensured that the performance options were still available – you just had to get creative about where in the company they were ordered from.
While that situation made those COPO cars both rare and, now, incredibly expensive, creating a very similar specification from widely available Chevy parts is not difficult – and results in a very desirable tribute car, like the example featured here.
With a through restoration and upgrade done both cosmetically ad mechanically, this simple high performance COPO tribute is ready to go for the next owner.
The Fathom Green exterior of this Camaro is in excellent condition. This was a professional refinish and the depth and color tint consistency is excellent. There are some areas visible in the pictures where minor paint flaws are evident, but overall the exterior presents very well.
Up front, the nose of the Camaro presents very well, with no evidence of scrapes or paint pitting. The grill presents in as-new condition, and the blue Chevy badge is in excellent shape. Both are, and operate properly, while the bumper is free from contact damage or scrapes, and well aligned with no inconsistent gaps.
In the rear, the paint finish is similarly excellent, with clean taillights with good red color free from fade. Both the spoiler and the bumper are level with good alignment from left to right, and the bumper chrome has good gloss and depth.
Along the flanks, the Camaro is free from ripples or waviness, with tight gaps and smooth paint finish. There are no dings or dents and the sheet metal is in excellent condition, though a small dent at the drivers side pinch weld by the lower quarter panel is visible.
The Camaro rides on body color 14” steel wheels, with white letter Good Year Polyglas tires for a period-correct appearance.
The fully restored interior is in excellent condition, with no evidence of wear or use.
The seating surfaces of the front high-back buckers are in excellent condition, with no wrinkling or color wear. Touch points like the armrests, steering wheel and shift knob are all clean and free from wear. Gauges are all original and factory correct, with large speedo and tachometer directly in front of the driver, and four additional gauges mounted low at the leading edge of the center console with wood applique.
The original AM radio is present and working. The black carpeting is new and in excellent shape, and all interior trim is present and in excellent cosmetic condition as well.
The engine bay houses a fully mechanically restored 454 cubic-inch V8, with Winters foundry period correct aluminum heads, and the foundry intake equipped with a four-barrel carburetor.
It’s bolted to a Muncie M20 four speed manual transmission. Drivability is excellent, with the fresh drivetrain and suspension tuned and adjusted.
Underneath, the chassis is clean, with no damage and the recent restoration presenting in as-new condition.
Fasteners and most components are all new and free from corrosion or wear, and the drivetrain is free from leaks or seeping gaskets.
