General

Up for auction is this 1967 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 COPO Tribute, finished in red over a black interior, powered by a 427 cubic inch V8 running through a four-speed automatic transmission, with 101,735 miles on the clock.

1969 Camaro COPO Tribute

This is a compelling "barn find" Camaro, restored then put away for two decades, and then finally pulled out into the sunlight last year. It is in great condition, runs and drives well, and is equipped with the proper engine and transmission with date codes from the era. Making it even more interesting is the research that determined it to be as close as it could be to being a COPO Camaro without actually being one - that fact finally confirmed by the group of people that know where to look.

1969 Camaro COPO Tribute

While it was understandably disappointing to the current owner to discover it wasn't a factory COPO build after purchase, it's still quite valuable in its own right. It's a very well specced first-generation Camaro, originally built in the plant in Van Nuys, California. It was fully restored and brought to a high specification, finhing a four year process in 2003.. and promptly stored in a barn for two decades straight.

Pulled out and cleaned up, and already hitting the show circuit, this COPO tribute does have some fluid leaks, as one would expect from a car that sat for so long, but it runs and drives with no hesitation.

1969 Camaro COPO Tribute

This is our second auction of a tribute car of the famed COPO specification of first-generation Camaros. COPO is the acronym for the Central Office Purchase Order, which was a department of Chevrolet usually reserved for dealers ordering fleet sales. But this was the era when GM was removing performance options from dealer ordering sheets - intentionally done as a result of public pressure over fear of high-performance cars being considered "dangerous". So, frustratingly, GM forbade Chevrolet from installing engines larger than 400 cu inches for all mid-size and smaller models - so the sports cars suddenly couldn't be ordered with the best engine.

Fortunately, the committed upper management at Chevy ensured that the performance options were still available - you just had to get creative about where in the company they were ordered from. Yenko Chevrolet, the famous Pittsburgh, PA dealership that ordered the most of these "forbidden" models, were among those committed to working the angles to get their favorite models with the big motor - despite the fearful corporate environment that resulted in the official ban.

While that situation made those COPO cars both rare and now, incredibly expensive, creating a very similar specification from widely available Chevy parts is possible - and results in a very desirable tribute car, like the example featured here. With a thorough restoration and upgrade done both cosmetically and mechanically, this high performance COPO tribute is ready to go for the next owner.

Exterior

The Garnet Red exterior of the Camaro presents in excellent shape, with the refinish in the original color looking very good after being cleaned up. Paint tint and color is consistent across all panels, with very good depth and gloss.

Bumper chrome is glossy and clean with no pitting or tarnish. Seller states that the car appears to have been refinished with no structural repair car, and has all factory sheetmetal. Quarter panels are also original with no rust.

All badging and logos are excellent condition and mounted in their proper factory locations. Wheels are the period correct Rallye style in a 15x7 size, with reproduction Good Year E70 tires. While in good condition with no rot or cracking visible, these tires were produced in 2000.

Interior

The black interior is in very good condition, with little wear or use since the restoration.

The dashboard has all the correct gauges, with a working clock, and the dash top is straight, with no warping or cracks.

The seat covers are new and in excellent condition, though the padding is old and probably needs to be replaced. Touch points like the armrests and shifter handle are clean and in excellent condition. Door panels are also in excellent condition, and while the rear side panels and window cracks are in good condition, they are the deluxe style, which are not correct for a base Camaro.

Overhead, the headliner is new, taut and properly installed with no fitment issues noted.

Mechanical

The engine is a 427 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 and is date-code correct for the production period. The 512-code block was manufactured in January 1969, and is equipped with the correct 840 rectangular port heads, manufactured in February 1969.

The engine runs through the proper Turbo 400 automatic transmission, along with the BE 12-bolt 4:10 Posi Rear, built in December of 1968. The Camaro is equipped with a chambered exhaust, running through stock exhaust manifolds. Original equipment includes power steering, and power brakes.

Pictures from underneath the car reveal a clean and extensively refurbished body and chassis, with no corrosion or rust. Modifications to the chassis include subframe connectors and adriveshaft loop.

Extra

This Camaro was manufactured by Chevy at their Van Nuys, California plant. It was restored between 1999 and 2003. This is when the engine and drivetrain were installed, and all glass and chrome were also replaced at that time.

After restoration, the Camaro was put in storage in a barn, next to a similarly restored Corvette. They languished until 2021 in a barn, unused. Pulled out of storage, the Camaro did require some cleaning and tidying up. While extensive research revealed that this was not a true COPO model, the level of quality and detail in the restoration still makes this a very desirable example of a first-generation Camaro. After cleanup, it was a feature vehicle this year at the GM Nationals in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in the Solid Lifter display.
