CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA
Up for auction is this 1978 Ford Bronco XLT Custom, painted in two-tone dark metallic brown and cream, with an off-white fiberglass half top. Owned by the seller for a year, this is a mildly modified example of the first model year for the second generation of the Ford Bronco. Along with a restoration performed in 2016, many fixes and upgrades were made during the last year by the current owner. Originally slated to be introduced in 1974, the energy crisis that year resulted in Ford delaying the introduction of this newer, bigger Bronco for four years, choosing instead to continue producing the old generation for that time. Unlike the first version, which was its own unique platform, this second-generation version was the first to share a platform with the F-100 line of Ford trucks, and was a substantially bigger vehicle in every dimension than the original. Ford sold more of these than the previous version, but because they delayed the introduction, the second generation Bronco was only produced for two years, in 1978 and 1979, before the third generation debuted in 1980.
This Bronco received a full repaint in the original colors during a restoration in 2016. The paint is in good condition with some wear, and minor scratches as shown in the photos. The rear tailgate does have some bubbling coming from beneath the paint. The chrome trim and bumpers are in great condition, with no sign of pitting, and are mostly straight with no damage, though the trim that runs along the top of the front grill has two small dents visible. The fiberglass half top is original, and is in excellent condition, and the fasteners are all in working condition.
The interior is in great condition, with some sign of wear on the drivers seat, but otherwise showing minimal sun damage. The dashboard is is excellent shape except for a small crack appearing just above the glovebox lid, as shown in the pictures. The original interior also shows some mild warping of the interior side panels in the rear seat area, and a bit of wear at the seam between the vinyl and cloth at the drivers seat at the entry point, The stereo system is aftermarket and extensive, with newer speakers including a Kicker subwoofer. An aftermarket alarm and security system is also included. The current owner installed a Yeti cooler box on the center transmission tunnel, but the original center console is still available and can be swapped out for the sale.
This Bronco is powered by the standard Ford 400ci V8, and comes with the stock C6 three speed automatic transmission. The four wheel drive system is also stock, and in good working condition. Recent mechanical work performed in the last year includes a new Holley carburetor with electric choke, complete refurbished a/c system and heat which are in excellent working order. Under the hood, the coolant lines, and brake lines were also replaced. Other items include brakes, brake master cylinder and seals, ignition coil, and sway bar. Tires are in good condition, and the battery was replaced last year as well.
This is a three owner vehicle with the current owner purchasing it in 2020. These early second-generation Broncos are a rare find in clean condition these days, especially in the ranger trim. This is a clean Bronco with a solid history and all services performed in order to make it reliable on a weekly basis. As the pics show, this is a clean straight example and needs very little. A great option for a collector or someone looking to daily drive a beautiful classic appreciating in value.
