    General

Up for auction is this 1983 Ferrari Mondial Quattrovalvole Coupe, finished in silver over a black leather interior, with the 2.9 liter 32-valve V8, five-speed manual transmission, and 81,725 miles showing on the clock.

The Mondial was for, a very long time, the overlooked Ferrari. While that’s a relative term, the 2+2 line of V8 Ferrari’s just didn’t capture the attention of the world at large like the more iconic coupes. From the 70’s 308 GT4 predecessor up through the multiple variations of the Mondial, the 308/328/348 two-seater V8’s it shared the showroom floor with got the lion’s share of attention. Yet, by the numbers, the Mondial was the more popular option with actual buyers, and was a consistent commercial success for Ferrari, both in coupe and convertible form. The mid-engine V8 coupe was the only Ferrari option if you wanted at least some kind of rear seat in this era, making them the “practical” choice, in the most generous sense of the word.

    1983 Ferrari Mondial Quattrovalvole

This early 4-valve motor Mondial has a lot going for it. The silver finish is rare, as these are almost impossible to find in anything but red. Additionally, a previous owner decided the ungainly large bumpers, always a black plastic, should fished in body color, giving the car an updated look.

The alloy wheels mounted to this Mondial are OEM Ferrari, but not the set these cars came with. The originals are the unique metric size wheels, with Michelin TRX tires being the only possible option – both hard to source and very expensive. This example has the more traditionally sized 16” wheels from a newer Mondial 3.2 installed, though the original metrics are included in the sale. The mounted wheels are equipped with fresh Continental Supersport tires, and in a size easily replaced with the new owner’s tire brand of choice.

Overall, this is a nice package, not without its flaws but overall a solid example, with some interesting upgrades and period-correct changes to make it a compelling option.

    Exterior

The exterior of this Mondial is in excellent condition. It underwent a complete refinish in August of this year, in the original factory silver, eliminating dings and chips. The bumpers are US specification, but with the shims removed - so they are more flush with the body, for a cleaner look. They were also changed from the standard unpainted black to body color. All body panels are straight with even gaps, and consistent color tint. All badges and trim are in equally clean condition, with clean chrome, and lights are free from cracks or sun fade. As noted above, the wheels are 16” OEM Ferrari wheels with fresh Continental tires, and are free from curb rash or scratches.

    Interior

The interior of the Mondial is in very good condition. The black trim is clean, with no warping or color fade from the sun. On the door armrests, there is some signs of mild wear and use, but no cracks or breaks in the material. The headliner is in good shape, though the sliding sunshade for the sunroof is drooping a bit. The driver seat has been recovered in a Naugahyde material and is not original, but the rest of the seats are the factory Ferrari leather, and the grain pattern in the driver seat matches the original equipment and the rest of the interior.

Aftermarket equipment include the Nardi wood rim split three-spoke steering wheel with aluminum spokes, and a period correct Blaupunkt stereo, with a flexible articulating arm with VU meters and sound equalization controls, in itself a very valuable item. As with the original alloy wheels, the original OEM steering wheel is included with the sale.

    Mechanical

The 2.9 liter V8, mounted directly behind the seats, is in good working condition, as is the five -speed manual transmission with the iconic metal shift gate. No drivability issues are present and the car passed the state inspection in June of this year. Underneath, the chassis is straight, with some mild surface corrosion visible on some bare metal parts and bolts. Some road grime is apparent, though it is free from drip stains or seeping fluid.

Known issues include the odometer that stopped working, so true mileage is unknown. Other areas needing attention are the inoperable door locks, power mirrors and sunroof, the electronic gas door release, and the electronic heater control valve.
