MORGAN TWP, PA, USA
Up for auction is this 1995 Mazda Miata M-Edition, finished in Merlot Mica over a Nardi tan leather interior with wood trim, a tan fabric convertible top, and 68,917 miles on the clock.
The Mazda Miata, originally conceived as a modern reliable version of legendary British roadsters like the Lotus Elan, has since become a legend in its own right. Originally available in the United States in the 1990 model year, it was an instant hit. It was praised for its excellent handling and driving fun, in a tight little droptop package that made it popular with both enthusiasts and the general population at large. Mazda is also very popular with amateur racing community; with a Spec Miata racing series they actively participate in with parts and support that highlights the strengths of these light little roadsters.
As a first-generation Miata, what makes this example stand out is the M-Edition package, being one of 3,500 made for the US market only. Specifications includes the Merlot Mica paint, leather seats and door panels, adjustable headrests, a polished roll bar, and 15” BBS wheels. With some extra wood trim and exterior chrome applied, this Miata is unique and in excellent condition.
The Merlot Mica Paint of this Miata presents very well, glossy and even across all body panels. The previous owner added chrome trim rings to the front grill, side markers, and taillights, plus a set of small projector-style driving lights mounted at the corners of the grill inlet up front. The 15” BBS wheels are in excellent condition, and are shod with BF Goodrich Comp T/A/ Sport tires.
The interior continues the theme of the M-Edition upgrades, with the tan leather upgrade found over the cloth from other Miatas of this model year. The adjustable headrests embossed with the “Miata’ logo are a special touch. In addition, the car received full burl walnut trim, some chrome accents on the dash and doors, and a full wooden steering wheel still equipped with the factory airbag. Seating surfaces are in excellent condition, with only minor wear visible on the drivers side seat bolster, and everything is in perfect working condition.
Miatas from this model year use a 1.8 liter, dual overhead camshaft four cylinder motor, with 129 HP and 110 ft/lbs. of torque. In a car weighing just under 2300 pounds, this motor is meant to run to its 7000 rpm redline to extract the best performance, and this example at 68k miles is in great health. The close-ratio five speed manual transmission also has a reputation for reliability, and is in perfect working order as well.
For a lot of enthusiasts, Miata stands for “Miata Is Always The Answer”. The first-generation Miata is one of those cars that managed to score a direct bullseye on its mission – a lightweight roadster that emulated the British models made for decades, but also be dead reliable and robust. There are quite a few of these early Miatas that are still running around, but with relatively low mileage and the M Editions specification, this one truly stands out, and would be a great purchase for anyone looking for worry-free fun.
